As 2008 dawns, most of us look to the New Year as a way to have a fresh start. We dream of setting new goals, make new promises to ourselves for improvements we want, and in general want to live a more fulfilling life. Instead of making resolutions for the New Year as many people do, though, I would rather set goals. Why?

Goals tend to focus on the positive, while resolutions tend to focus on the negative. For example, I choose not to make the punishment-oriented resolution that I'm going to forbid myself to eat junk food. Instead, I'm going to set myself a rewarding goal; I'm going to establish a new and healthy plant-based nutrition by June. You see? One focuses on punishment, while the other focuses on positive change.

1. Cleaning out for the New Year

If your diet was less than stellar during the holidays, you're not alone. Most of us slipped at least a little with a few indulgences we'd rather not have made. However, now is the time to make a fresh start and clean out your system. For this, you want to focus on your elimination system, better known as your colon. One of the best ways to do this is to use our cleansing cabbage soup diet. This diet can help you flush out toxins for a fresh, clean start (literally) in the new year.

I usually recommend the newer cabbage soup diet plans, because these have extra protein for healthy weight loss. However, when you are in the midst of a cleansing, it's better that you use the most basic and oldest cabbage soup diet available, which doesn't have added protein. 3. Great Little Helper: Aerogarden

I just found out about this wonderful product the other day. It's an indoor garden that lets you grow your own herbs and some select vegetables as well. It's called the AeroGarden and it's small enough to fit on your countertop, about the size of a microwave. You can also mount it to the wall if you wish.

You can grow fresh, organic herbs year round, no matter the climate you're in, so you always have been a your fingertips. Best of all, it's computer controlled and feeds your herbs the right amount of water and nutrients automatically, so that you never have to worry about taking care of them yourself.

Even if you have a "brown thumb," it's easy. You just add water and an organic nutrient tablet when the AeroGarden tells you it's time. And if you travel a lot or are gone frequently, not to worry. You can leave it completely unattended for up to two weeks at a time. It doesn't get much simpler than that! For more information, read a longer review of the AeroGarden here.
