tomatoes on vegetable diet days

Can I have tomatoes on the days you can only eat vegetables? I was told that tomatoes are fruits. Since we have V8 in the soup which is tomato based I wanted to know why it would be excluded on vegetable days.

Dear JJ,
there exist in deed old cabbage soup diet plans that don't allow tomatoes as vegetables.
But I don't see any problems for the same reason as you've written. Most cabbage soup recipes include tomatoes.

So on vegetable days go ahead and use tomatoes too if you like.
