The Zone Diets

The Zone Diets are very popular nowadays. Do they work? Is it good for you as longterm concept after your 7 day cabbage soup diet week?

Hollywood Stars like Demi Moore, Jennifer Aniston, Sandra Bullock, Sarah Jessica Parker claim to have followed the Zone Diet to help them get – and keep – their famous figures. True or not - read here everything you need to know on it and who should go for this diet and who not.

Who invented the Zone Diet and why?

Barry Sears, a former researcher in biotechnology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology developed "the Zone". Sears claims that the American is "fat" due to a high intake of carbohydrates.

According to him this eating causes an over-production of insulin. In addition to causing weight problems, excess insulin is responsible for imbalances in eicosanoids. That again he connects with other aspects of bad health, such as arthritis, heart disease and cancer among others. Dr. Sears solution is to eat the perfect ratio of lower carb, moderate fat and higher protein to balance these hormones within the allowed "zone."

Basic Facts

The basis for this type of diet is to achieve the correct ratio of carbohydrate to protein to fat (40 – 30 – 30). That’s why this diet is named sometimes 40-30-30 diet.

Important for this concept is, that the carbohydrates dominate the proteins and fat. The energy for the dieter has to come mostly from carbohydrates, whereas fat and protein play an inferior role. The foods that you actually get to eat aim to control your body’s insuline production.

Foods you can eat

No snack or meal is forbidden in this diet, yet you can shed pounds or fat. The zone diet plan concentrates however mostly on vegetables and fruits, followed by low-fat, lean proteins, and a low amount of monounsaturated fats. It’s said that carbohydrates enter the bloodstream slower with the presence of fats. That’s why the Zone Diet requires that you add to every meal some monounsaturated fats such as olive oil, almonds, guacamole or nuts.

Foods to avoid

Noodles, breads, rice, grains and other carbohydrate-laden foods should be avoided but are not forbidden, when staying in the 40-30-30 ratio! They fall in the category of high density, or fat-free carbohydrates and you can overeat these foods very quickly. When eating food with too much carbohydrates - according to Mr. Sears - excessive production of insulin is caused. Unused carbohydrates however will not only store fat in your system, but may be dangerous to your health.

Advantage of Zone Diets

The positive aspect about the Zone is that the follower is encouraged to eat at least every five hours. Junkfood, sweets, chips and other which many people tend to overeat is mostly eliminated. It concentrates on many healthy foods which creates a basis for a whole lifestyle change.

Biggest Disadvantage

The meals have to be prepared and planned very exactly. That needs time and effort! But that's no problem any more as the so called zone diet delivery services have popped up.
