Gastric Bypass Surgery Cost

How much does gastric bypass surgery cost?

If you need to have a bariatric surgery, the gastric bypass surgery cost can vary quite a bit. Factors such as how experienced your surgical staff are, the duration of your hospital stay and if any complications arise are all taken into account, and will affect the final amount.

Number of weight loss surgeries increases

With more and more Americans falling into the obese category, this has resulted in a sharp increase in the amount of gastric bypass surgery being carried out.

In fact, in 2002 alone, over 63,000 operations were done, according to figures from the American Society for Bariatric Surgery.

Gastric Bypass Surgery Cost

Depending on the type of surgery required, the cost of gastric bypass surgery can be anywhere between $20,000 and $50,000.

However, the good news is that more and more insurers are now seeing the benefits of this type of surgery, as opposed to long-term side effects of letting the obesity continue.

Gastric Bypass Surgery Cost Addition:
Insurance costs

Because obesity can cost insurers quite a bit of money over time, with hospital visits, medicinal requirements, etc, the cost of the operation may be covered in your policy, especially if it’s a newer one. You should check with your employer, though, since a lot of companies don’t offer this type of cover.

A Gastric Bypass Surgery Cost Example

If $20,000 and upwards is too hefty a cost for you, then the Affordable Bariatrics centre will offer you the RNY gastric bypass for around $12,000.

Even the more expensive laparoscopic operation only costs $16,000, and you can even pay via monthly payments. However, there is a downside – it’s in Bogotá, Colombia.

Be aware of complications

As mentioned earlier, the cost of an actual bypass depends on certain factors, one of which is if there are any complications or not. The main problems that could cause complications are infections, leakage around the wound, and gallstones.

Since many insurers won’t even include the gastric bypass itself in any type of cover, the cost of complications can be quite severe. It’s therefore a good idea to find out how much such things may cost, and arrange a pre-authorisation with your insurers.

Other longterm Gastric Bypass Surgery Cost

Once you’ve had the gastric bypass surgery, that’s not the end of how much it costs. Things like aftercare, as well as dieting help and even counselling to help you keep the weight off, are all going to cost money. That's why you should take the time to look into how much this will cost as well as the operation itself.
