Hi Maryam, we recommend eggs as substitution on the meat days 5 & 6, but you should limit the amount of eggs to 4 eggs per day - and have your doctor check your cholesterol levels before and after, in case cholesterol is an issue for you. No nuts as substitution recommended.


I do not like Day Seven: Brown Rice Day. Is it okay to substitute it with Day Four: Banana & Skim Milk Day? Which I really do like much better.

Hi lz,
no egg whites - exception if you are vegetarian and can't tolerate tofu on "meat days".

Yoga would be great for your overall wellbeing.
But the best what you can do is fat burning exercises like running, walking, swimming or biking. Every morning 1/2 hour minimum would be great!

Weights only in combination with fat burning workouts - otherwise you will gain weight (because your muscles get stronger and heavier)

Is there a substitute for brown rice. I have stuck to this diet religiously. I thought it would be hard but the ingredients made me feel like I was eating very healthy and the soup was not that bad. You just get bored with it. I think it allows you to transition to a change in your eating habits.

I must be the only person in the world who has not lost 1 lb. on this diet and I have followed it religiously. Today is day 6 and not 1 pound. Maybe my body is allergic to cabbage or maybe there are too many carbs. This diet really sucks!!!!!

Can someone please tell me what the problem might be. I have not strayed once!!!!!!!

WHY LIMIT USE OF THIS DIET TO ONCE EVERY THREE WEEKS?

Why limit the use of this diet to once every three weeks? If we were living in the 1800's, eating a basic cabbage soup and a bit of meat would be common. They probably ate crusty bread too, but they worked harder physically than we do. Why would this diet be so hard on us?

Sweet Potatoes instead of Bananas?

I am not a fruit person... Is there any chance that I can substitute sweet potatoes for the bananas? They are lower in cals, fat & carbs but higher in potassium...

I'm a vegetarian, can I repeat Day 7 for meat days 5 & 6?.... not too keen on tofu!!!

The 7 day cabbage soup diet builds each day on the other. We have no experience with your suggestions, but it ressembles a 4 day cabbage soup diet in combination with a 3 day rice diet. Check with your doctor, if he allows it, then go ahead and try. Please be so kind as to post here your results. Other vegetarians might be interested too and will profit from your experience.

Can't eat cabbage - Is there an alternative vegetable to Cabbage

I am unable to eat cabbage and onions due to stomach problems. Can I do this with any other vegetables and still lose weight? or just leave out the cabbage & onions and have the other vegetables?

you might want to try the vegetable soup diet that works similar to the cabbage soup diet but uses vegetable soup without cabbage!

Cabbage Substitute

Can I eat just the vegetable portion of the soup and eat both tomato & cabbage seperate or does it have to be cooked in the soup?

Also, are there any substitutes for cabbage such as brussel sprouts or even swiss chard?

Also, I have been adding a dash of gravy master to my tomatoes....is this a no no?

Hi Judy,
there exists a vegetable diet soup variation without cabbage for those who don't like cabbage.
This soup works too. It is based on cauliflower and spinach/swiss chard - you'll find the recipe here: diet soup recipes. On this page you will find a second diet soup recipe based on chicken and broccoli.
It's up to you what soup you use.

And of course you may eat cabbage and tomatoes separate, but only on the so called "vegetable days" (Day 2,3,5,6,7).

Gravy Master is a seasoning based on corn and soy, made from caramelized sugar, salt and other spices. Sugar is not allowed while on cabbage soup diet. And salt only in limited quantities.
For best results we recommend a low sodium seasoning.

black rice as substitution for brown rice

What I wanted to know is if you can substitute BLACK rice instead of brown rice. It's just as healthy. The product is organic with 100% whole grain and gluten-free.

substitute for day 4 milk???

Is there an alternative to day 4? I am ok with bananas even I don't like them very much, but I can't get any milk down - no way!!! As this obviously must have something to do with calcium input - what can you advise me? (I do not need this day to control my desire for sweets, as I don't have any - I get fat on too much nice, "good" food)

Hi Nicole,

Would you please post back to me (messaline) about the amount of weight you lost using almond milk.

I see that almond milk has fewer calories (86 skim - 70 almond) than skim, it has 2.5 grams of fat per 8oz. And one of the basics of this diet is to limit fats.

Btw, how do you make your almond milk?

The reason this diet works so well is that it comes from Drs. and dieticians who know foods/herbs and their effect on the body. Any time you go off the listed items for the soup you risk not losing maximum weight.

The first time I did this diet, I followed it to the letter and lost 17 lbs. It is such a stringent diet, I don't see doing it for 7 days and not getting my maximum out of it.

What should I do I can't tolerate the milk substitutes or soy milk what should i do?


Hi Phila,
If you can tolerate protein powder, then check out the convenient cabbage soup diet plan with added protein shakes twice a day. Instead of the suggested whey or butter milk in the recipes you add water to the protein shake and fruits.

If you can't tolerate protein powder then we
recommend to accept this fact and switch to another appropriate healthy food diet option.

For milk you may try soy milk. Instead of meat you may use tofu. If you don't like these substitutes - we recommend to choose another jumpstart diet.

yes, you can have other vegetables instead of tomatoes.

Don't repeat the cabbage soup diet too often.
3-4 times per year is however ok.

Pearl Barley as rice substitute?

I am now successfully completing day 5. I ate jellied beef for breakfast with two bowls of pureed soup with chilli - i love it pureed to velvet consistency more than chuncky.

At lunch time had one bowl of cabbage soup but with spinach added to the mix - no carrots, not tomatoes and no peppers as i just cannot digest the peppers anyway i cook them.

I had grilled tomatoes with oregano and onion
made a tomatoe chutney from mustard, toms, porcini mushrooms and salt, pepper, chilli and a little broth from the soup and had 4 thin barbecued steaks with just rock salt - tonight i just cannot eat anymore - so a cup of tea with skimmed milk.

Tomorrow i will eat fish instead and soup and vegetables too - spinach, courgettes and anything else - for breakfast i will have natural tuna and for lunch a whole Orata fish - similar to sea bass
bake in parchment with fresh herbs and tomatoes.

I think this diet is great although it is hard on the days when you cannot eat fruit for breakfast -i chop and stew apples and cinamon with pears and oranges and eat huge bowls for breakfast - love it.

It has worked for me as i am on bed rest and have not felt hungry or bloated or constipated - i have not put on a gram infact i work out and usually have to work hard at keeping slim but even not doing anything i can keep off the weight and feel satisfied and nourished - the diet has not been ard for me to follow as i eat like this anyway -

MY QUESTION - BROWN RICE, CAN I SUBSTITUTE THIS WITH PEARL BARLEY AS I DO NOT LIKE BROWN RICE THAT MUCH - OR WHITE RICE, I AM GOING TO MAKE PORCINI RISOTTO USING SOME OF THE SOUP PUREED TO MAKE IT CREAMIER.

To anyone that is on this diet at the moment - stick with it, it works, it is energizing, purifying and nourishing - i do not know what to do next week as i hate calorie counting - but know too that i should not do this for more than a week at a time - anyone who says that you just lose water weight is nuts - you lose weight and some - it helps you to realise that if you eat healthier from the start, you can achieve more than sticking to ridiculous diets.

I love the creative way you approach the cabbage soup diet.
If you can't get whole grain barley than it makes no difference if you eat pearl barley or white rice. At both the healthy hule is removed..They will do their job too for day 7 but you might risk some sugar cravings with white rice or pearl barley...
