maximal weight loss with cabbage soup diet

What is the most someone has lost in the first week?

The highest weight loss post I remember was 12 pounds within a week. But this is very, very rare and mostly due to the loss of a high water volume when switching to a low fat and low sodium nutrition.

A typical weight loss pattern for the cabbage soup diet is: 7 - 10 pounds within a week.

have only lost a pound or two

by Kelly Kerwick
(Portland Oregon)

I have done the cabbage soup diet for years and usually loose the weight. I'm on day 7 and have only lost a pound or two. I don't get it!

I eat avocado on my vegetable days and a small amount of frozen peas in my soup. Could this effect my weight loss?

I also add organic vegetable broth in my soup to make it tastier. Could the sodium be preventing my weight loss? Help! A lot of work and little reward can be frustrating!

Hi Kelly,
usually it's true that the more often you repeat the cabbage soup diet the less impressive is your weight loss effect. But there might be additional reasons for your minimal weight loss effect.

If the organic vegetable broth is high in sodium this might have an effect on the water retained in your body - the balance will show more pounds...

Another aspect is the avocado that is high in fat and NOT allowed when on cabbage soup diet. The same is true for frozen peas that together with other legumes like beans or lentils are not allowed while on cabbage soup diet.

Dear Kelly,
the most reasons for your small weight loss success you have found out by yourself. As you are an experienced cabbage soup dieter I would recommend to you to eat the next days/weeks the cabbage soup (with Low sodium broth) as a starter before your meals. By doing this your meal portions will be smaller and you will lose pounds in the long run.

All the best,
Gabriela

Still not losing weight with the cabbage soup diet

by Lisa
(Ohio)

My sister, my husband and I are on day 4 of this diet. We haven't varied anything or cheated...and he lost 4 lbs.

My sister and I have lost nothing. In fact, I gained a pound as of this morning and haven't even begun banana and milk day. Should we stick this out or throw in the towel and look for another diet jump-start?

Hi Lisa,
I know - this can be very depressing. Some people see an impressive weight loss only the day after the 7 day cabbage soup diet. If your "diet history" is long, you won't lose as much as if you were dieting for the first time.

When you throw the towel now, you will never know if the cabbage soup diet works for you...

Stick to it till day seven and weigh yourself the day after! I'm sure you should see and feel a weight loss success.

Continue after the 7 days with a appropriate longterm weight loss program eg. low fat nutrition.

If you like the taste of cabbage soup you may even use it as a starter before your meals after the diet week. This again will help you to shed even more pounds.

All the best for you, your husband
and your sister,
Gabriela

No weight loss

To say I am devastated is an understatement! I followed the cabbage soup diet for 8 days (until I ran out of the ingredients) but I have not lost a single pound. I wish I knew what went wrong as it was hard going even if it was only for a week. I had high expectations after reading of all the success other people have had.

Not loosing weight
by: Amy

I am on day 4 and i havent lost any weight yet!
i have been eating about 5-6 bowls of soup a day and at least 4-6 glasses of water daily.plus all the other foods for the day that you are saposed to eat. i cheated on day 2 with a total of 100 calories and again on day 3 with the same... but i am also mesnsturating , would that have anything to do with it since you gain a little and retain water weight on your period?

No weight loss

by Marie
(Ontario, Canada)

I've started the cabbage soup diet on Monday and it is now Thursday. I haven't lost any weight yet or if I did, the most i lost was 1 lbs which is so little compared to the 4lbs i see people losing on their 1st day!

I've followed the daily instructions to the letter and haven't cheated. I even skipped the backed potato on day 3. To be honest, I'm a little discouraged because I see absolutely no change apart from the fact that i'm really bloated mornings and nights.

Is it even worth it for me to continue since most people lose their weight on the first 3 days?

Although it is my 4th day, I'm not tired of the cabbage soup like most people are. I love cabbage and drank alot of soup on my day 1-2-3, perhaps i drank more than i should have???

Let me know what you think, I'm on the verge of giving up!

Hi Marie,
please don't give up! There are several factors which may influence your weight loss. Please read here my answer to a similar question. Check especially the sodium content of your soup and in case you use liptons you may want to change to a low sodium bouillon.

For a better motivation I warmly recommend to check our weight loss motivation section.

All the best,

Gaining Weight and Liquor Date

by Sharon

Hi 2 questions:

1. Been following the diet to the T. Love cabbage soup and went through 2 big pots in 3 days. And a lot of the other stuff just as allowed (but A LOT). Also, been lifting weights and running daily. Why in the world did I GAIN 4 lbs????

2. On day 6 I'm going out and will drink liquor. I will still eat the allowed food, but will this totally nullify all chances of lost especially since I've GAINED?

Ugh. BUT the one good thing is I LOVE the soup so will continue to eat it.

Signed,
Stuffed Like A Cabbage

Dear "Stuffed Like A Cabbage",

sorry for this late reply...

1. Gaining 4 lbs might happen when your fat zones are transformed to muscles due to you lifting weights. And muscles are heavier than fat! But overall after 7 days you should still see that you have lost weight in your fat zones - meaning that your clothes size has shrunk - although your weight maybe remains the same - due to your gained muscles.

2. Drinking liquor is not the best idea on the cabbage soup diet. Alcohol might stop your weight loss on day 6+7.

But with you Running daily and your love for cabbage soup you should still see a weight loss success after 7 days.

All the best,
Gabriela

Can I substitute beef for chicken or fish?
by: Anonymous

I have lost 5 pounds and I am starting day 5 where it tells me I can have 10 to 12 ounces of beef. My husband and I bought two nice T Bones and I'd like to know if I can add mushrooms and onions to those. The next day it says eat of all the soup and beef that you want. Can I substitute the beef for all the fish that I want if I would grill it or steam it? Can I use olive oil with lime or lemon on the fish?

Hey,
congrats to your lost 5 pounds!!!
Yes you can add mushrooms and onions to the beef.
You can substitute the beef with fish the next day and yes you can use olive oil with lime, just don't go overboard with olive oil.
Cheers
Gabriela

NO WEIGHT LOSS
by: Jullie

It's my 5th day on the cabbgae soup and the same here, NO WEIGHT LOSS..this is crazy i'm vegetarian and also don't use diary, not only I don't eat meat but no chicken fish or seafoods. So my overall diet is very strict and healthy!!! I'm a bit discouraged that I am not loosing any weight. On top of all this i'm very active,so far I have jogged, spin and did the insanity workout.. I did the cabbage soup over 10 yrs ago in a period of 1 month and lost over 25lbs so i find it annoying now i can't loose just 1 lb.. another thing i'v noted which I never had before was a constant discomfort of blaoting all day long, with belly aches and stomach cramps? I'v purchased some beano for the balance of the diet, SO DISCOURAGED.. but i am going to try it for another week and see what happens.I may need to make some changes though!

Hi Jullie,
I understand your feelings. It is a fact that people with an already healthy lifestyle won't see such an impressive weight loss than people with a bad lifestyle. Think about it. There is not much potential for a big jump start in weight loss. Why? Obviously you were doing a lot of things already right before you started the cabbage soup diet. Probably you are eating healthy, low sodium, low fat, doing a lot of workouts... - these are all things people with a bad lifestyle aren't doing hence the csd is a big game changer for them. You don't need this game changer - for you a much better approach would be finding a healthy long term concept.
If you still insist doing the cabbage soup diet - please make sure to add protein to your diet week like e.g. 2 protein shakes per day. That way you protect your muscle mass from melting! All the best.

ONLY 2 POUNDS
by: Anonymous

I AM ON DAY 5 OF THIS DIET AND I HAVE ONLY LOST 2 POUNDS. I HAVE FOLLOWED THE DIET EXACTLY AND FIND THIS 2 POUND WEIGHT LOSS VERY DISCOURAGING. WHY AM I NOT LOSING MORE WEIGHT...2 POUNDS IS NOTHING CONSIDERING I LOST 40 POUNDS PRIOR. I WANTED TO LOSE 10 POUNDS AND I WAS HOPEFUL THAT THIS DIET WOULD HELP ME ACCOMPLISH THAT. I HAVE NOT BEEN USING SALT SO I AM DEFINTELY NOT RETAINING WATER. PLEASE ADVISE.

hi i started doing this diet for summer i want to look my best .
i have a question

It's my fourth day on this diet and i haven't lost anything yet , but i read some of the comments above and most of people said that sodium can stop you're weight loss, and I rememberd that on vegetable day i kind of put i little bit of salt on my veggies, did i just ruin my diet ?
Am i going to have to start over ?

Dear Sandra,
the salt over your veggies won't ruin your cabbage soup diet. But please watch your overall sodium intake. The best weighing date is the day after the cabbage soup diet.

All the best,
Gabriela
